Users can try out paid-for mapping service with free two-week trial.

Marine electronics manufacturer Navico is offering a free two-week trial of the paid mapping subscription available via the C-MAP Embark app.

Embark was acquired by C-MAP from its Norwegian developers a year ago and, more recently, the company was absorbed into the Navico stable.

The app offers a range of mapping data derived official hydrographic offices which is then continuously updated and augmented from thousands of data sources to help complete gaps in coastal and inland water bodies. Updated monthly, the maps work across multiple platforms including smartphones, tablets and PCs.

The charts are designed to show all the information needed to navigate safely such as depths, market buoys and anchorages. The maps also automatically adjust their colour and contrast depending on the light so boaters are always able to read them clearly whether it is sunny or at night.

For fishing enthusiasts, the app also features a contour mode which offers a high-resolution bathymetry view, helping users target the best fishing spots.

“With the launch of C-MAP Embark, we have vastly improved the planning and navigation experience of any cruising, sailing or fishing trip,” said Sean Fernback, CTO, Navico. “By providing users with the right information before, during and after their time on the water, they can be confident in the choices they make and enjoy a more stress-free journey, wherever they decide to go.”

Users can also use the app to create and save their favourite routes then share the information with other boaters via text or email. Recipients do not need to have the app in order to view the route.

Using the Premium service, users can download off-line maps and weather information for use where there is no internet connection. Planning and tracking can be synchronised as soon as internet or cellular data is accessed.

Available for both Apple iOS and Android from Google Play and the App Store, Navico is currently offering a free 14-day trial of the Embark app premium service.
