BLA Trade Talk: Lewmar sheet winch maintenance products

Comments Comments

Regular winch maintenance keeps you in control.

It is important to perform regular maintenance on your Lewmar sheet winches. The frequency of this depends on how you use your boat. Racing boats should have their winches serviced at the beginning of the race season and throughout the year. Day-sailing and coastal cruisers should do this at least once a year. And ocean-crossing, long-term cruising boats should do this before any long passage, at a minimum once or twice a year.

Lewmar winches are very easy to disassemble and normally only require minimal replacement of components within the winch. Maintenance is simple and inexpensive: just apply a light amount of grease to the gears and bearings and use only machine oil on the pawls and springs. However, it is certainly worthwhile to have spare pawls, springs and other small components on board your boat as well as Lewmar winch grease and race lube so that you can do this servicing while away from the marina or mooring if necessary.

Lewmar provides maintenance and owners manuals for sheet winches and are also available for winches made pre-1992.
