Video: Construction of John Dunphy artificial reef
THE NSW Department of Primary Industries has posted an online video of how Australia's largest offshore artificial reef complex was constructed and installed off the southern Sydney coastline in October 2017.
The reef, named in honour of the late fishing tackle industry identity John Dunphy, is located in a depth of 30 metres approximately 2.5 km south-south-east of Jibbon Point near Port Hacking, NSW, and consists of 36 x 25 tonne concrete modules.
By all accounts there are plenty of baitfish and other species frequenting the reef already, and fishing reports of at least one marlin hooked at the location so far this season.
There are also plans to install five more artificial reefs off the NSW coast over the next few years.
GPS co-ordinates of the John Dunphy Reef are:
Central point of northern reef cluster: 34 05.660 S 151 10.658 E
Central point of southern reef cluster: 34 05.936 S 151 10.438 E
