Latest Whitehaven flagship uses Twin Disc transmission and propulsion.

Twin Disc has announced that the latest flagship model from Whitehaven Motor Yachts, the 7500 Sports Yacht, has been fitted with a complete Twin Disc transmission and propulsion control systems including joystick controls.

Called Finito, the new vessel was officially handed over to its owners, Ray and Denise David, on the Gold Coast in November before setting off to cruise back to their home port of Darwin.

“This is our final boat, hence the name Finito,” said Ray David. “We wanted everything to be just right, from the layout, fittings and interior details to all the navigational equipment onboard.”

Whitehaven founder, Keith Hanson, said the new owners were impressed with all the attributes of the Twin Disc systems.

“Ray and Denise experienced the technology first hand at the 2016 Sanctuary Cove Boat Show on the Twin Disc demonstration boat,” said Hanson. “We were all convinced by the Twin Disc QuickShift transmission, coupled with its EC300 propulsion. The Express Joysticks are a sheer joy to use and make docking and manoeuvring simple and user-friendly.”

Finito uses the new Twin Disc QuickShift transmission, designed to interface with the Twin Disc EC300 MGX Electronic Control System. There are three Express Joystick System (EJS) stations, one at the main helm and one each side in the cockpit. Working in tandem with the EJS, Express Positioning can maintain a vessel in a fixed position and heading at the touch of a button.

Trevor Tucker, Twin Disc sales manager, Northern region, Queensland, NZ, South Pacific and PNG, explained how it all fitted together.

“The Twin Disc integrated system starts with QuickShift transmission for precise control of the propellers. Over the top of those gear boxes is the EC300 dual leverhead station at the main helm.

“Then we added the Express Joystick system that puts you in complete control of the props and the proportional bow and stern thrusters, which ramp up and ramp down progressively depending on the movement of the joystick.

“On top of the joystick system we added the positioning system, which is where the magic comes in. You just push the button and the boat holds its position, like the ‘hand of God’ holding the boat in one place!”

In a first for the company globally, Twin Disc Pacific integrated its system with the hydraulic thruster system from Side Power, which also supplied the stabilisation system.

“And it worked very well, in fact it was perfect!” said Tucker.

Hydraulic thrusters were specified as they allow for continuous operation where electric thrusters do not.

“Electric are good for trimming the boat while docking, but with continuous use can overheat and shut-off,” said Tucker.

Finito can be controlled conventionally through the EC300 dual leverhead station up to full speed while the joystick is used for docking and travel or manoeuvring at slow-speeds up to 10 knots.

“This is ideal in the case of Finito,” added Hanson. “The joystick and positioning system are perfect for Ray and Denise. In Darwin, they have to take their boat through a series of locks and this system gives them precise control and manoeuvrability in a relatively confined space.

“Being a large boat, they wanted precise control when they berth and when they’re island hopping navigating in the Whitsundays or closer to Darwin, the Wessel Islands and Tiwi Islands.”

Tucker added that another reason why Whitehaven chose Twin Disc was its compatibility with other brands.

“We can control not just our Twin Disc gear boxes and engines, but any make and model of engine and gear boxes,” he said. “If a boat gets refurbished, and the engine changed for example, our technicians will reprogram the EC300 control system to suit that make and model.”

For technical service and support Twin Disc offers a comprehensive dealer network across the Pacific region.

“Twin Disc Pacific has a head office in Brisbane with locations in Perth, Gold Coast and Sydney. Our technicians receive thorough training, as do authorised dealers, and our service team can travel to any point in the region.,” said Tucker.
