NSW Government releases watery budget

THE ailing NSW Labor Government today released its budget, committing $6.44 million towards recreational infrastructure and boating safety in the state.

This is part of the Keneally Government's $25.9 Million, which will be allocated to new capital works, improving safety on the state’s waterways, upgrading Sydney Harbour commuter wharves and the Sydney Harbour cleaning fleet.

Through the Better Boating Program NSW Maritime will invest $5 million towards recreational boating infrastructure across the state.

“From upgrading dinghy storage racks, to building boat ramps, jetties and vessel sewage pump-out facilities, we are delivering better boating facilities for NSW families,” said NSW Ports and Waterways Minister Paul McLeay.

Through today's budget, the Keneally Government is also supporting volunteer rescue services.

“Marine Rescue NSW plays a vital role in keeping boaters safe and provides a valuable service to the community,” McLeay said.

“They will receive $1.44 million in ongoing funding from NSW Maritime’s operational budget to continue their essential work.”

The Keneally Government said it is delivering safer, cleaner and more accessible waterways.

“Safety on our waterways comes first. That’s why $2.2 million will be invested in new patrol boats and engines, giving Boating Safety Officers more resources to patrol our waterways," McLeay said.

An additional $1 million will be invested in navigational markers, signs and public moorings this year.

Major upgrades include:

• Upgrade of the leading light at Port Macquarie

• Upgrade of locality light at Bellambi Boat Ramp

• Replacement of old timber poles in Brisbane Waters and Hawkesbury River

• Upgrade of Corrie Island Leads in Port Stephens

• Upgrade of Evans Head and Kiama Lighthouse lights

• Replacement of old deteriorated poles and buoys in various waterways

• Continuation of Lake Mulwala upgrade

  • Great. This is from a Govn't that has major issues with its Maritime group doing behind the scene deals that are illegal, costing us tax payers money but being pushed aside. So don't expect too much real action to suit or fix boating issues. They will find ways to waste the allocation.

  • I trust some of the money allocated to marine safety will go to properly run organizations who will not waste it like marine rescue pty.ltd. Who wasted heaps on new utes for the blessed few.

  • That should mean one new ramp after all the cost Governmental departments will use up first.
