Marine Queensland takes aim at Garrett

MARINE Queensland has expressed serious concerns with the handling of the Bio-Regional Planning Process (including the Coral Sea) by Minister for the Environment Peter Garrett.

“It has significant similarities with the home insulation debacle,” said Marine Queensland GM Don Jones.

“An independent assessment of the science used by the Department of Environment justifying the Coral Sea Declaration by Minister Garrett has been shown to be fundamentally flawed.

“There is no debate about the need to protect the environment – just as there was no debate about the benefits of home insulation.

“What is critical is the ability of the Department of Environment to engage key stakeholders to enable sophisticated management measures to be developed for these pristine marine environments.

“This process is on the verge of significantly impacting regional communities and the Marine Industry. The poor handling of this process is an accident in progress."

Marine Queensland is calling for the immediate halting of the process and for a Royal Commission to be launched into the integrity of the process.

reader comments

  • Further to my previous comment, I opened the Marine Queensland web site and read the article on the announcement. I was supprised to find that there were about 40 comments on the press release, with just over 50% in some way in favour of Garrett and the proposed changes. This supprised me as I would have thought that most comments came from within the industry itself. Many comments supporting were in the style of the far right wing anti everything Government theme. I recommend that if you are interested you open the Marine Queensland web site and see for yourself.

IN a forum of this nature, perhaps it is never a good idea to display one's political leanings overtly or forcefully or display partisan, opinionated leanings in any way, but as yours truly submits all his treatises and opinion pieces from the safe haven of a pseudonym, that basic rule of etiquette can therefore be dispensed with...
