Got a great idea for a boating app?
Digital Yacht launches competition to find 'game-changing' boating apps.
Any budding coders out there have an opportunity to win up to US$2,500 in a new competition being run by UK electronics manufacturer Digital Yacht to find the next big thing in boating apps.
The Code Afloat challenge for code writers seeks to encourage and recognise ideas and applications that ‘change the game’ in the field of marine navigation, communication, safety, control or entertainment.
Applications and ideas will need to utilise Signal K, the open source interfacing platform designed for marine electronics. Digital Yacht has a special interest in the Signal K having developed iKommunicate, a NMEA to Signal K gateway that allows any existing marine electronics system to interface with Signal K, making it easier for any boat equipped with traditional NMEA-based marine electronic systems to integrate with tablets, smartphones, PCs and Macs.
New applications in the challenge could include new visualisations of instrumentation, social media integration, engine diagnostics, digital control, logging, charting, monitoring or security.
Entries will be assessed by independent experts in the industry in the US and Europe. A headline prize of US$2500 for the app awarded 'Change the Game' and a 2nd and 3rd prize of US$500 each for the best 'Transform my boat' concept. The 2nd and 3rd prizes are aimed at boaters who may have a great idea but lack the coding skills to make it a reality.
The competition is open now and closes on the 31 October 2017 with the winners announced in December. More details can be found at a new dedicated Code Afloat website.
