BRP has signed an agreement with Tohatsu Corporation to supply a range of Evinrude branded outboard engines from 3.5 to 15 HP.
In keeping with its push for clean technology and expected tougher emission regulations, the Evinrude branded Tohatsu outboards will all be four stroke models.
The new engines will be available at BRP dealerships in early 2012, adding to BRP's existing line-up of Evinrude E-TEC outboard engines of 25 to 300 HP.
"We believe Tohatsu Corporation, who builds quality and market-proven engines, to be the right supplier to complete the Evinrude line-up," said BRP president and CEO José Boisjoli.
"BRP's focus remains on the development and manufacturing of high-value and higher horsepower engines, using the E-TEC technology that we will continue to enhance with industry-leading features and benefits over the years to come."
Brunswick Asia Pacific GM John Temple told Marine Business Mercury was disappointed and disagrees with Tohatsu's decision to supply BRP. Temple did however downplay any effect this would have on Mercury's sales and supply.
"We believe Mercury's global service and distribution channels and brand are distinctive sources of differentiation. Additionally as a partner of the TMC joint venture Mercury Marine has priority access to TMC product and the priority access will mitigate any future supply issues," said Temple.
BRP said it has invested considerably in the Evinrude brand and E-TEC technology, including a $15-million investment in its state-of-the-art facility in Sturtevant, Wisconsin, U.S. This agreement further supports its commitment to the Evinrude brand.
Whilst BRP’s focus will continue to remain on the higher value and higher horsepower Evinrude E-TEC engines, BRP said the extension to the Evinrude line-up between the 3.5-15hp is good news for both Australian consumers and local Evinrude dealers.
Outlining some of the benefits of the agreement, Kym Pardey, marketing manager BRP Australia said: “By extending our range, Australian Evinrude dealers will be able to offer even more choice to customers. Furthermore, a logical single brand solution is now available to Evinrude E-TEC owners looking to complement their boat with a lower HP outboard for use as an auxiliary, or for their tender.”
News of the Evinrude range extension follows the recent announcement of BRP's partnership with Telwater. Having recently signed two promising OEM partners in Asia and continuing to build its relationship with one of Australia's fastest growing fiberglass OEMs in Tournament Pleasure Boats, Evinrude continues its strengthen its standing within the Australian and wider Asia Pacific boating industry.
