BIAWA signs Aquatic Biosecurity Charter

IN the presence of the Minister for Fisheries, the Hon Norman Moore, Sherry Donaldson signed the Aquatic Biosecurity Charter on behalf of BIAWA.

In doing so she agreed to partner with the WA Department of Fisheries to protect the State's aquatic environment from pests and diseases.

This commitment means that the BIAWA believes:

· Western Australia's diverse and rich aquatic ecosystems make up a unique and precious resource for everybody to use and enjoy;

· It will work with the Department of Fisheries to ensure our aquatic ecosystems and biodiversity are protected against pests and diseases;

· In supporting the development of the best research, innovation and policy to ensure that world class prevention, control and emergency response strategies prevent the spread of aquatic pests and diseases in Western Australia's precious waters.

Sherry Donaldson said that she was pleased that the BIAWA was asked to sign the Charter and is looking forward to using the Hillarys Boat Show in March to promote the concept with the public.

In the meantime, through BIAWA member Martin Box, the Department of Fisheries will also be trialling a new in water inspection technique which involves vacuum sealing boats under 45ft while they are in the pen.
