Queensland marina is first to gain accreditation under global scheme.

Abell Point Marina in Airlie Beach, Queensland, has become the first marina worldwide to be accredited under the new Global Gold Anchor scheme, the new joint venture of The Yacht Harbours Association (TYHA) and the Marina Industries Association (MIA) which was launched at METSTRADE last year.

The new scheme is being rolled out progressively to cover more than 250 Gold Anchor marinas worldwide accredited under the old TYHA and MIA Gold Anchor schemes. Over the new two years, these marinas will move across to the new scheme as they are re-audited as part of the on-going accreditation cycle. The scheme rates marinas on a scale of two to five Gold Anchors with Abell Point being awarded the full five.

Abell Point Marina is a 507-berth marina at the gateway to the Whitsundays and Great Barrier Reef catering for boats from 12m-60m. Owner Paul Darrouzet said it is an honour to be the first accredited marina under the new scheme.

It is a very momentous occasion for Abell Point Marina as we have taken a previously run down 2.5 star marina to a 5 star marina that now sets a benchmark across the globe.

We are based on the doorstep to the best cruising grounds in the world, why can’t we have a world class marina experience to match?

What we are creating here is a significant regional tourism asset for Australia. It is fitting that we are receiving this high level global accreditation which reinforces our position as a leader in tourism and recreational boating,” he said.

At the presentation of the award, MIA executive officer Colin Bransgrove agreed that it was fitting that Abell Point Marina should be the first Global Gold Anchor accredited marina.

The scheme is designed to inform marina users as to the level of services and facilities at the marina and to encourage continual improvement within the marina industry. As a major regional tourism destination in its own right, Abell Point Marina has a strong customer focus and is continually improving its offer to both boating and non-boating customers.

In presenting Abell Point Marina with the rating of five Gold Anchors it is setting an excellent marker for other marinas to benchmark against,” he said.
