WA Marine Safety Conference

The national conference is the sixth hosted by the National Marine Safety Committee (NMSC) and this year’s theme is “Safe Passage to a Marine Nation”.

NMSC’s CEO Margie O’Tarpey said: “The conference committee is pleased to welcome international and local experts to deliver a program which reflects new directions for national marine safety in Australia.”

“In addition to Irish Water Safety’s CEO John Leech, British Columbia’s FishSafe manager Gina Johansen and Michigan State University’s marina research specialist Dr Ed Mahoney we have a presentation on the second day from US Coast Guard’s Boating Safety Division Head, Jeff Hoedt”.

Local presenters include Western Australia’s Minister for Transport Simon O’Brien; a panel including the CEO of AMSA Graham Peachey and Director General of the SA Department of Transport, Jim Hallion; Acting Commissioner for Marine Rescue NSW Glenn Finniss; ABC TV’s 2009 Inventor of the Year, Colin Chamberlain with his innovative Aussie Safe Propeller; NMSC’s principal technical Advisor Mori Flapan on the topic of “What should be done with Grandad? – discussing the application of new standards to the existing fleet”; and several industry heads offering their “take” on marine safety issues today.

“I urge all marine industry reps, those engaged in the regulation and education area and others with an interest in the maritime sector, to come over to Perth for this significant event on the maritime calendar,” O’Tarpey said.

Following the conference, the Australasian Institute of Marine Surveyors (AIMS) is conducting its biannual forum on 25 August 2010 in Fremantle WA.
